San Radiology & Nuclear Medicine

Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology is a specialised division of the San Radiology & Nuclear Medicine Department responsible for a wide range of procedures performed under image guidance. Image guidance enables a much higher degree of safety and a more minimally invasive approach than traditional surgery. These procedures are performed by a highly trained team which includes an Interventional Radiologist, nurses and radiographers.

The San Interventional Suite is state of the art with the new Philips Azurion Flexarm System. This system offers un-paralleled flexibility and image quality, giving the best possible outcome for our patients with the lowest radiation dose possible.

The doctors who provide these services at the San are part of Sydney Interventional Radiology, located in San Clinic Suite 407.

San Radiology & Nuclear Medicine and Sydney Interventional Radiology are proud to offer a comprehensive range of interventional procedures such as CT Guided Spinal Injections, Uterine Fibroid Embolisation, Prostate Artery Embolisation, Genicular Artery Embolisation, SIR Spheres, Trans-Arterial Chemoembolisation (TACE), PICC and Portacath insertion, drainages, biopsies and many more.

CT-Guided Spinal Injections

CT-guided spinal injections such as facet joint, epidural and foraminal injections are used to relieve pain and inflammation in the spine by precisely targeting affected areas with anti-inflammatory medication. Guided by detailed CT imaging, Interventional Radiologists like Dr Colin Tan ensure the medication is delivered accurately, minimising discomfort and enhancing treatment effectiveness for conditions like sciatica, herniated discs, and spinal arthritis.

Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE)

UFE is a highly effective treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids, providing relief from heavy bleeding, pain, and pressure. This minimally invasive procedure led by Dr Eisen Liang involves blocking the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink. Using advanced imaging and procedural techniques, our team performs UFE with precision, helping patients avoid surgery and experience faster recovery.

Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE)

PAE is an innovative treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that reduces prostate size by blocking blood flow to the enlarged prostate. This minimally invasive procedure led by President of the Interventional Radiology Society of Australasia, Dr Chris Rogan can significantly improve symptoms like urinary frequency and discomfort, offering an alternative to more invasive surgery for eligible patients. With advanced imaging, our specialists ensure the highest level of accuracy and patient care.

Genicular Artery Embolisation (GAE)

GAE is an innovative, minimally invasive procedure used to relieve knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. By reducing blood flow to the inflamed areas of the knee, GAE helps to decrease pain and inflammation without the need for surgery. This minimally invasive procedure led by President of the Interventional Radiology Society of Australasia, Dr Chris Rogan precisely targets the genicular arteries, providing patients with a safe, effective option to manage knee pain and improve mobility.

SIR-Spheres

SIR-Spheres Y-90 microspheres are a cutting-edge treatment for liver tumors, delivering targeted radiation directly to the tumor site. This approach helps control liver cancer while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Precise image guidance is used to perform this therapy, optimising outcomes and providing an effective treatment option for patients with liver malignancies.

Transarterial Chemoembolisation (TACE)

TACE is a targeted therapy primarily used to treat liver cancer by delivering chemotherapy directly to the tumor while blocking its blood supply. This dual-action approach helps to localise treatment, reducing side effects and enhancing the effectiveness of the chemotherapy. Using advanced imaging guidance, Interventional Radiologists perform TACE with precision, offering patients a powerful, minimally invasive option for managing liver tumors.

A tissue marker is a very small object that is inserted into the breast either at the time of a biopsy, or to mark a previously diagnosed abnormality. There are a number of different types of markers available and the radiologist uses the marker clip most suitable for your particular requirements. There are different materials used in the various markers that are available and the markers come in a variety of shapes. Different shapes are useful if there are multiple areas to be marked in the same breast.
